the study of artifacts from the past
artifact
any material product of human behavior
site
a location where artifacts are found
assemblage
a collection of artifacts brought forward for analysis and interpretation

Words About Time

synchronic
concerned with something as it exists at one point in time
diachronic
concerned with the way in which something has developed through time
anachronism
an act of attributing a custom, event, or object to a period to which it does not belong

Archaeological Excavation

stratification
the layering of the earth, especially the deposits and interfaces that result from human behavior
stratigraphy
the study of stratification
context
a spatially bounded deposit or interface within which time differences can not be distinguished
stratigraphic sequence
a temporal ordering of contexts at a site

Context Contemporaneity

deductive correlation
established with artifact similarities
inductive correlation
established with independent dating techniques such as radiocarbon or U/Th.
